How To Vanish

I think there was a time when he really did love me and I really loved him. A time where nothing mattered and we were made for each other. We got married in June of ’06 and it was not long after the honeymoon before trouble started.

At first he’d get angry and slap me. Then, he would be remorseful say sorry with a gift and promise it would never happen again. But, it happened again and it got worse. A slap turned into a punch which eventually turned into these beatings that he ‘nor I could control or stop.

My life was hopeless. I had nowhere to go and I was being hunted each and everyday in my own home. I tried hard not to anger him. Wondered what I had done wrong and tried to make it all right. Tried to be better but, it was never enough. I wish it was.

That is when I had enough. Slowly I started stealing the money we had. I opened a bank account that was supposed to be secret but, he found it when he ran a credit check on my name. I received the worst beating that day and I think it was then I stole the neighbor’s identity to escape.

Upon visiting her home I found her purse and took the opportunity to scribble down her social security number. The very next day I opened a bank account in her name. I started stuffing money there. No one knew. No one cared. No one was looking for it.  Missing just like I am.

Then one night while my husband lay out drunk in a solid sleep I sought refugee in my neighbors home, they housed me that night and I felt terribly guilty but I had to do it. I took her driver’s license. I mean she wouldn’t miss it we were both blonde girls and I needed to get away. It was the only thing I could think of doing.

I wish I could have stayed home. I wish he loved me. I wish so much was happening that was not.  I want a better life for myself but it’s so difficult. I wish it was better. I am crying writing this. It’s so hard. There has to be something better in life for me. I was convinced of it and I was convinced to find it.

So, soon after that I had become my neighbor. I opened credit cards in her name wore colored eye contacts to look more like her in a way I became her. I did more than steal her identity I assumed my life as her. I imagined everyday that I would come home to her loving husband and that life was wonderful.

She had everything I never had.  Everything I wish I had. Everything I wish I was. I took credit cards out in her name and for a while I had access to money and lots of it. To this day I have not been caught but I feel like I must be going crazy.

I started dating a new guy. He seems nice but it will never work. I flinch every time he leans in for a kiss at night. Its so unfair. I hate it. I just do not know what to do. I guess this is how it is. Life is hard and life sucks. People suck. I’m never going to be who I want to be.

I’m a writer so this is a journal entry. Where it will go or how it will get there is beyond me but I am sending it out on the World Wide Web. I am looking for help for refugee. I am hoping to feel better but things are so difficult.

I thank god everyday that beatings prevented me from having a child. I could not imagine a child involved in this life.  As much as I want someone to love me back the way I love him. I mean them. I guess I’ll never have that.

This is me. This is my life. I don’t know if you can understand but I am now another woman. Someone that I admire and wish I really could be. It’s only a matter of time before I get caught for fraud and in a way I think I want to get hurt or caught. I just seem to be built that way and I don’t know life any differently.
